Expert Advice: Transitioning to Grey Hair
By Lisa Coody, Hair Stylist
When trying to transition your hair to grey, it’s best to, one, be willing to embrace the grey roots. You will no longer be doing any root cover ups.
You’re going to want to avoid any all-over color at this point. All hair color will now need to be applied by foils, or it will be best to do highlights mixed with silver/ grey lowlights. You can also opt to go heavy highlighting the whole head and follow up with just a silver toner.

If your hair is already a light shade, highlights and a good hair gloss can also be an option at this point.
Once you’ve made your transition, or started your transition, you’re going to want to do some applications to take care of your hair at home. You’re gonna need to do regular conditioning treatments, shampoo twice a week with a good purple-toning shampoo, you’re going to want to schedule regular follow-ups for maintenance with your hair stylist.
At this point I must add that to do a full transition you’re gonna be looking at anywhere from 6 months to 18 months to obtain this. I also would like to add that in order to obtain grey/silver hair in an unnatural hair color, the process can require many costly sessions. The end results still may possibly never be what you are actually searching for. Many at this point give up and add color back to their hair.
